My day yesterday started good, but ended in disaster.
I was able to catch up on my sleep, which is good. My mom and I went to my oldest cousin's bridal shower, then went to Gottshalks to shop for a few things before they go out of business.
When we got home, I found a chewed up package of gum on the ground.
DOG OWNERS AND LOVERS, THIS IS IMPORTANT.
About a year ago, I got an email that talked about a woman's dog who ate gum and nearly died because of it, but luckily made it because one vet had heard of this. By now, all the vet hospitals where I live have heard of and know how to treat for it.
There is an ingredient in gum called Xylitol that is toxic to dogs. They don't know enough yet on what amount of gum would be toxic for what size of dog, but it is never good.
I called the emergency vet and told them what happened, and they told me how to narrow it down to find out which one of them it was. I had to induce vomiting in my dogs to find out who had it.
Sydney had a small piece of the gum about the size of the tip of an index finger in her stomach.
I about lost my mind with worry.
I took her to the emergency room, even though she was acting fine. It could take twenty four hours for anything to go wrong, and I was not going to let anything like that happen. After talking to the vet, I came back home and got the other two, Maggy and Suger, and they are there as well. Every few hours they all have to have their blood tested to be sure their Pancreas isn't failing.
Sydney is my best friend, and has never been left anywhere besides home. The look on her face when the techs took her to the back broke my heart.
Please pray for all three of my dogs. I'm worried sick, and couldn't sleep more than four hours last night, even with the aid of alcohol.
I'm going to call to check on them now before I go to work.
